We knew it had to arrive sometime. Politico magazine is reporting that oil industry billionaires David and Charles Koch have been directing nearly two million dollars into Oregon TV markets to do attack ads on Senator Jeff Merkley which can only be aimed at benefitting one person, Merkley’s GOP opponent Dr. Monica Wehby of Portland.
The money on Wehby’s behalf is, according to Politico, being funneled through a little known political action committee called “Freedom Partners,” a group that funneled over $250 Million dollars in attack ads against democratic candidates nationwide in 2012.
“Wehby has spent most of her time out of state seeking financial backing that could counter Merkley’s popularity and fundraising strength in Oregon, and she’s found it handsomely in Freedom Partners program,” said a Merkley campaign supporter. “Wehby has been spouting many extreme right wing financial and economic policies that continues the war on the middle class by exporting jobs overseas while America’s super-wealthy and their corporations pay taxes at lower and lower rates, all under the promise of creating more well paying jobs – which haven’t materialized.”
When Wehby has made herself available to reporters, which hasn’t been often, she has accused Merkley of being a tax and spend democrat whose politics runs up the country’s debt on the national credit card. She claims that another six years in the Senate will only hurt America’s emerging recovery from the recession.
Merkley fired back, “By adopting the Koch Brothers economic plan for the country, there will be huge cuts in many important government programs, not the least of which are Social Security and Medicare. Both programs are fully funded and have strong reserves based on solid social security and medicare taxes. This is just more war on the middle class.”
The Wehby TV political ad blitz begins around the middle of August in Portland, Eugene and Medford TV market.
