The annual Special Olympics Torch run, sponsored by Newport Police Officers, was conducted today (Friday) along Highway 101 from Walmart to the north end of the Yaquina Bay Bridge. It’s an annual fundraiser pledge run to enable local Special Olympians to pay for their journey to compete at the regional games in the valley.

The Lincoln County Special Olympics bocce team athletes competed in a tournament last Saturday in Eugene at Shasta Park. Partners Dale Nash and Scott Guenther earned a gold medal in their division. Partners Kim Hammett and Kayla Kinane earned a bronze medal in their division and Gavin Tomlinson also came away with a gold medal. Bocce coaches are Bill and Kristy Kinane.
Anyone interested in participating in the Lincoln County Special Olympics is welcomed and is encouraged to call Nikki Holland for more information at 541-270-5581.
The turn out was great at last evenings Newport Police Department “Tip a Cop” program where law enforcement waited on tables and received their tips but later gave them to Lincoln County Special Olympics. Newport Police Sergeant Ken Real said that he was very gratified when Izzy’s stepped forward to provide the location for the fundraiser which is aimed at paying for local Olympic Champs to travel to other parts of Oregon for the state finals.
Real says Dutch Brothers Coffee earlier this year raised the bar pretty far during a Special Olympics observance there. Real says the group probably raised enough money to get to the regionals and finals.
The Newport Police Department, employees of Newport Dutch Brothers Coffee, and members of the Lincoln County Special Olympics, recently raised $1,000.00 for local Special Olympic athletes. This money remains in Lincoln County, and is used to send local athletes to regional and state events throughout Oregon.
The Newport Police Department and Newport’s Izzy’s Pizza will be holding a TIP-A-COP fund raising event on Tuesday, April 17th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Izzy’s at 5251 N. Coast Highway. Newport Police Officers will wait tables; all tips will be donated to the Lincoln County Special Olympics.
The total fund raising goal is $2,000, which will enable our local athletes to attend events throughout the 2012 season. Please direct any questions regarding these events to Sgt. Ken Real at 541-574-3348.
The Newport Police Department, Dutch Brothers Coffee, and the Lincoln County Special Olympics have joined forces to raise awareness and gain support for our local Special Olympic Athletes.
In an effort to allow our local athletes to attend upcoming sporting events, Dutch Brothers Coffee has donated time, resources, and finical support by offering a $5.00 “Cops for Cause Card”. These cards offer 2-for-1 on any size beverage, or any 16-oz. beverage for $1.00. The cards each have a total of 10 stamps that may be used in any combination of the above options.
The cards are on sale until 06/01/2012, and are valid Monday through Friday. All proceeds from the card sales go directly to Lincoln County Special Olympics.
To obtain information on where to buy these cards, please contact Sgt. Real at the Newport Police Department at 541-574-3348, or visit the Newport Police Department’s face book site to view upcoming locations and events where cards may be purchased.
