This familiar scene of “the passing of the check” by the Newport Rotary stands out because it’s helping to keep shut-in senior citizens in their own homes. Not only for their mental and social well-being but also for preventing them from having to live out their lives in nursing homes that often cost taxpayers $3,000 to $5,000 a month. For others it’s even more. A LOT more.
So, a big Newport Thank-You! to The Newport Rotary as they took some of the proceeds from their recent Christmas Dinner Fundraiser and put them in a $550 check to the local Meals on Wheels Program, which delivers hot meals to seniors in their homes. In addition, the program runs a senior “meal site” at the Newport Activity Center during the week for those who can get to the senior center but who find that there is always “too much month left at the end of their money.”
Meals on Wheels Manager Allison Keith thanked Rotary President Steve Brown for the critically needed funds, since all government safety net programs have been substantially reduced due to the country’s nearly four year recession.
Wheeler says her Council of Government’s Meals on Wheels Program does more than just deliver meals to needy seniors. The driver delivering those meals is sometimes the only person that a senior sees over the course of a week or month. She says drivers get to know them and can make sure that they’re okay. And if a problem comes up, whether with their homes, pets or themselves, the proper agency is notified so that it may provide immediate and compassionate assistance.
The Newport Rotary. Going strong since 1955, helping Newport area seniors keep going strong too.
The Newport Senior Activity Center is pleased to offer two free workshops by Mo Dunphy, visiting licensed fitness instructor from Lorain, Ohio, November 3rd, & 4th. These will be circuit style classes, and Mo uses several unique methods that work for all fitness levels. She has a focus on balance, coordination and movements, and is trained as a senior fitness and strength training instructor.
Mo has an impressive resume, including being a member of the International Fitness Professional Association, an organization that conducts ongoing annual training for the Fitness Professional. Her many years as YMCA Head Trainer, from 1999 to the present, as well as her involvement with the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program are only a few of her many fitness credentials.

Breathing is a good thing…but even better when you’re breathing while balanced. At least that sounds like the message offered by the Newport Senior Center and their Breath & Balance program:
“The NSAC announces our free Breath & Balance classes offered on Thursdays and Fridays from 3-4 PM in our Wellness Studio. We will not have class on November 11, Veteran’s Day, or November 24, Thanksgiving. Come and enjoy some relaxing exercise, developed with evidence-based outcomes from the American Arthritis Association. Work at your own pace while meeting others improving their fitness level.
