Newport Seafood & Wine Festival’s Commercial Wine Competition entered its 27th year with 168 wines submitted for the 2013 contest. The competition was held February 8 and 9, about two weeks before the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival.
An elite panel of judges who have worked together for two decades were Brooks Tish, Loren Razzano, Georgia Ross, Gerry Warren and Thomas “Mac” McLaren. They are experienced wine writers, wine buyers, and retail merchants.
The Commercial Wine Competition is the longest continuously running contest of its kind in the Northwest.
This year a total of 29 gold medals, 35 silver medals and 40 bronze medals were awarded to new and returning wineries to the Festival. 60 wineries entered a total of 168 different wines.
Best of Show was Spangler Vineyards’ 2010 Grenache, a winery from Roseburg, Oregon.

Newport’s 36th Annual Seafood & Wine Festival is roaring along on the picturesque Oregon Coast, February 21st through February 24. This event is held in a tented venue located near the Rogue Ales Brewery at the South Beach Marina in Newport. Artists and Craftsmen will showcase a variety of fine art, sculpture, photography, pottery, and jewelry. Pacific Northwest Wineries are pouring the finest of wines and culinary professionals are serving cuisine of delectable delights that entice your palates.
Parking is available in the area, or you can ride shuttle buses with many stops around newport.
The last weekend of every February, the central Oregon coast resort town of Newport, swells to well over 17,000 visitors coming to the Festival! for a weekend of wine, wonders in the culinary world, seafood and arts & crafts.
Over 35 food vendors, 24 crafters and 85 wineries will be found at this enormous Festival!
A large variety of craft items will be sold, from articles of clothing, jewlery and art glass, metal sculptures, works of art and hand-painted creamics to handcrafted wine accessories.
Be sure to book lodging early, there is still some availability at this time, but lodging will fill as the event draws closer.

Newport’s Seafood and Wine Festival is in its final day today, running from 10am to 4pm. Still lots of great seafood to sample along with some of the finest wines from Oregon and throughout the Pacific Northwest, even California. It’s all going on in that huge tent city at the South Beach Marina, next to the Rogue Brewery.
