Waldport: Old Waldport High School is no more. Burned to the ground…left in a heap of ashes and debris

Newly minted firefighter volunteers get a taste of “Big Fire and Big Water” as they burned down the old Waldport High School this past weekend.

What took years to build and then add-on to. was wiped off the planet is two afternoons in Waldport over the weekend. Volunteer firefighters from throughout the region took advantage of what was described as a once in a life time chance to gain many years of firefighting experience compressed into two weekends.

The fire-setter’s torch was making the rounds this past Saturday and Sunday, lighting off the old high school’s portable classrooms between the main building and the sports field. They burned very quickly. Soon after they set fire to the easterly facing classrooms along NE Crestline Drive.

Everything went well according to host Central Coast Fire Rescue Chief Derek Clawson. He said firefighters from Aurora to Yachats, and from Newport to Polk County saw more fire in two weekends than some firefighters see in many, many years.

Here’s how it looked and sounded as the 3rd version of Waldport High joined the other two in the history books.

When the flamin’ and sprayin’ were over, the area once again went silent – except for a few latent burning embers and wiffs of smoke wafting skyward.
