Lincoln City City Councilors broke out their checkbook Monday night to pay a little more to make the undergrounding of unsightly utility lines stay underground a little farther north and away from the D River Beach area. Instead of the wires going underground from SW Ebb and resurfacing at Kylos, the lines will stay underground to a spot in front of the Shearwater Hotel, just south of NW 2nd. But it’ll cost another $200,000. Redevelopment officials say it’s more money but well within the scope of the overall budget. Councilors reasoned that if they were going to do it right, and keep the utility lines out of view of the beach at D River, this was the way to go. So they authorized the extra money.
There seems to be more than a slight possibility that work crews will bore the underground conduit under the D-River this winter to get that part of the job out of the way, leaving the rest of the work for spring. The million dollar-plus undergrounding will greatly enhance the “big look” of the ocean for tourists going north and south on Highway 101.
