Witnesses say the SUV in front of them was headed south on 101 toward Waldport when suddenly the vehicle lurched right, off the road and over an embankment and down about 25 feet. It landed in thick brush which prevented it from plunging into a lake just beyond.
The woman inside was trapped. Firefighters from Seal Rock and Central Coast Fire Rescue got to her within minutes. With one on the inside helping to push her up and out of the vehicle, another prepared a portable gurney to slide her up the hill to safety.
The woman did not appear to be seriously injured. She told an OSP Trooper that she saw a cat running across the road and swerved to miss it. In a flash she was off the road and headed down hill.
She was loaded aboard an ambulance for a trip to PCH to get evaluated for any injuries.
