Thursday update from Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, 3:10pm
On Wednesday evening Lincoln County Sheriff”s Deputy Larson along with North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and Pacific West Ambulance, responded to an address in the 900 block of Riverbend Ln in Otis for a man needing assistance who had fallen by the river. 69 year old John Henry Davenport III of Otis, had walked down toward the Salmon River behind his house and had slipped and almost fell into the water. Davenport’s wife came to look for him and found him on the embankment near the water edge and he told her to call for help.
Mrs. Davenport called 911 requesting assistance and walked back to the area where her husband was located, but she could no longer see him. Mrs. Davenport slipped and twisted her ankle in the dark looking for her husband needing medical attention. North Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, provided medical care for Mrs. Davenport, and looked for John Davenport until about 1030pm. Due to dark conditions and slippery terrain the search was called off for the night.
On 11/14/2013, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team was called out and started their search along with members of the North Lincoln Fire water rescue team at about 0800am from the last known point John Davenport was seen. At about 1000am, about a 1/4 mile away from the house, John Davenport was found deceased in the Salmon River by Search and Rescue Personnel and was recovered.
The Medical Examiner evaluation is still pending. Alcohol appears to be a factor in Mr. Davenport’s death.
North Lincoln Fire Rescue personnel report that the body of the man who had fallen down an embankment behind a home at 968 No. Riverbend into the Salmon River Wednesday night has been found. Reports say a search crew resumed their search Thursday morning. At 10am, they came across the man’s body in four to five feet of water. He was deceased. More information is expected from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. No name yet released. Early police radio conversations indicated that the man was elderly and had been drinking. A woman in the house went down the embankment in an effort to save the man, but she injured her ankle and could not continue. It is believed she was brought back up to the house by fire-rescue personnel.
Sketchy reports indicate that an intoxicated elderly man fell down an embankment behind a home at 968 North Riverbend Road and fell into the Salmon River.
A woman tried to crawl down the hill after him but injured her ankle in the attempt. Search and Rescue has called in the Coast Guard to provide lighting to allow them to search the area quickly.
Coast Guard Helicopter has just arrived on scene. Coast Guard will begin search from where the man was last seen and work down stream from there.
NewsLincolnCounty.com listening post in Otis says the Coast Guard has checked a half mile downstream to the hatchery dam and have found nothing. They’re back-tracking upriver using their big spotlight. Our listener said rescuers doubt the victim went over the dam. They’ll search a bit longer, let the searchers and police regroup, and decide how to proceed from there.
