The Mayor of Newport has signed the employee contract documents and Spencer Nebel has signed them as well. The deed is done and Spencer Nebel will join the City of Newport on December 16th as it’s new city manager.
* Pay is $115,000 per year + benefits
* Moving expenses covered
* Cell phone and car allowance
Awaiting him will be a number of strategic issues, not the least of which is the creation of a new north-city urban renewal district that is a major strategy to finance major improvements to the town to enhance economic development, including renovating store fronts, streetscapes, sewer, water and storm drainage lines and possible utility undergrounding along Highway 101 from Highway 20 north. Also the construction of a new Aquatic Center next to the Recreation Center, general economic development challenges, disposing of surplus city property, helping to coordinate the city’s reevaluation of its support of the Visual Arts Center and possibly the same for the Performing Arts Center. Also the future of the Newport Airport. Over the past few years there was an escalation of city support to raise the status of the airport to accommodate regularly scheduled airline service. Since that experiment ended in failure last year, that more costly approach has been backpedaled, at least informally with an eye to possibly reducing direct city supervision of the airport in exchange for privatizing certain operations to reduce city expenses.
In short, a full plate.
Again, Spencer Nebel slides into the City Manager’s chair December 16th
