Story from Bayfront Tsunami Dock promoter Bob Ward:
I was passing the Tsunami Dock on the Bay Front and noticed a group of about forty Japanese visitors, mostly teenagers. It turned out that they were part of a delegation from the Wilsonville- Kitakate Sister City Association, on their annual exchange visit!
Cathy Rice, VP of the Wilsonville delegation and Jiro Satou, President of the Japanese delegation of the Association, accompanied the youngsters who had said they wanted to visit somewhere that had experienced debris from the 2011 Tsunami.
Kitakate is a little north of Tokyo and about 60 miles from the Japanese coast. When the Tsunami struck in March 2011, hundreds of people displaced from their coastal homes by the tsunami took temporary refuge in Kitakata. Mr. Satou said that he thought it very appropriate that part of the dock torn from its moorings in Misawa was being used to help save lives here on the Oregon coast.
