Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into a single vehicle traffic crash that occurred Friday night along Highway 20 just east of Newport. The vehicle’s two occupants insisted the driver walked away from the scene before a witness and emergency responders arrived. Anyone with information to confirm who the vehicle’s driver was is asked to call OSP.
According to Senior Trooper Bryan Fitch, on Saturday night at approximately 10:20 p.m., a 1999 Mercury Cougar with two known occupants was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 2 when it lost control, struck an embankment and came to rest in a ditch along the westbound shoulder. Two intoxicated occupants were found with the vehicle identified as JUAN CARLOS ZARAGOSA, age 21, from Keizer, and DANIEL D. WARNER, age 27, from Salem.
A witness drove upon the crash scene and told OSP and Newport police that no other person was seen walking in the area prior to their arrival. Both men said the driver walked away from the vehicle west toward Newport. They said they left a party in the Siletz area and didn’t have a name for the driver.
Both men were transported by ambulance to Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport for a medical evaluation of possible injuries. While at the hospital, ZARAGOSA was determined to have a misdemeanor warrant for Harassment out of Marion County. He became combative at the hospital and was arrested by Newport police. ZARAGOSA was lodged in the Lincoln County Jail.
WARNER was released from the hospital without any confirmed injury.
Anyone with information regarding this investigation to identify the driver is asked to call OSP Newport Area Command office at (541) 265-5354.
