Big Creek Road repair expected to be complete by the end of November – maybe sooner, depending on the weather
Construction continues on the restoration of Big Creek Road that links Big Creek Park and the Big Creek neighborhood with NE 12th Street at Sam Case School and the city pool. It is an important evacuation route should there be an emergency like fire, flood, earthquake, tsunami, what-have-you. The $750,000 repair job is being funded totally by outside money – FEMA and state grants.
The project involves stabilizing the uphill side of the road to prevent sloughing off, as well as fortifying the downhill side of the roadway that falls away more like a cliff than an embankment. Pilings are being driven at the base of the uphill side of the road, complete with hill “armament” designed to prevent slides and falling trees.
City Public Works Director Tim Gross says when complete Big Creek Road will continue to be a one way roadway. He said it’s designed more as backup access to Big Creek Reservoirs and the city’s water treatment plant as well as the Big Creek neighborhood which, at the moment, has only one way out to the northwest toward Highway 101.
