Verizon Wireless phone customers in the Newport area (at least) had trouble getting and making phone calls for what appeared to be a two hour period late in the morning, spilling over into the noon hour.
Customers would dial a number and nothing would happen. No sound of a ring from the other end. Then they’d get a “call failed” display on their screen. Rebooting the phone didn’t create any improvement. A local Verizon store said they had a number of customers come in reporting they couldn’t make phone calls, yet store phones worked okay. A call to a Verizon data center revealed only that the system was up and running fine. No sign of an outage.
As of 1:10pm, Verizon customers seemed to be back up on line. And so far so good. A call to a Verizon data center revealed only that the system was up and running fine. No sign of an outage.
When something goes wrong, many digital processing centers have automatic system “self-healing programs.” It may explain our experience this morning.
We’ll keep checking.
