Fire District to Sponsor Tsunami Stroll & Town Hall Meeting in Gleneden Beach

New tsunami evacuation maps recently released by the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) reveal that most homes and businesses in Gleneden Beach from Wallace Street to just south of Salishan are only in the “local” tsunami zone. Fortunately, none are in the “distant” tsunami zone.

In efforts to prepare citizens for tsunamis, the Depoe Bay Fire District is sponsoring a Tsunami Town Hall and a Tsunami Stroll (drill) in Gleneden Beach. “We want residents to know how to protect themselves during an earthquake and where to go afterwards,” said Assistant Chief Hank Walling.

There are three activities associated with this event:

1. Town Hall, Tuesday, October 15, 6:00 –7:00 pm at the Gleneden Beach Community Hall. Residents will receive a new tsunami map, learn about the risks associated with a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami and how to protect themselves, find out about the new tsunami assembly areas and learn how to participate in the Tsunami Stroll.
2. Tsunami Stroll: Thursday, October 17, 11:00 am. Practice your tsunami route. Leave on foot from your home or business and gather at one of the two designated “Temporary Tsunami Assembly Areas.”
3. Tsunami Stroll Celebration: Immediately following the Tsunami Stroll, go to the Community Hall to talk about the drill and to celebrate. All Gleneden Beach participants will receive gifts for their emergency go-kit. There will also be prizes awarded to the best decorated go-kit, as well as the oldest and youngest participant, the largest family group and the cutest couple.

Other elements of this event include:
Along with the new tsunami maps, new signage will be installed to guide residents to the newly designated “Temporary Tsunami Assembly Areas.” For this area of Gleneden Beach, the Assembly Areas are near the Christian Church and across the street from the Post Office.

Lincoln County Emergency Management will utilize the mass notification system, Citizen Alert, the morning of the drill to remind those who reside in this area of the drill at 11:00am. If you have a regular phone you plug into the wall, you are automatically signed up for this free service. If you have a cell phone or other contact devices (text, email, fax), you will need to register your information at: www.LincolnCountySheriff.net Look for the Citizen Alert icon.

For more information about these events, please call the Depoe Bay Fire District at 541-764-2202. Visit www.OregonTsunami.org or www.Ready.Gov for more information on how to be prepared for earthquakes, tsunamis or other hazards.
