By now, most of us have heard about the death of Joe Bell, a La Grande parent whose gay son committed suicide after being bullied at his local high school. Joe Bell was walking across the country to “make a difference” in the way gays are treated in this country. As Joe walked along a lonely stretch of highway in Colorado, he was struck from behind by a truck, driven by a driver who reportedly had fallen asleep at the wheel.
As fate would have it, talking to Joe Bell a day or two before the accident, the local Sheriff, who was touched by Joe Bell’s message, invited him to speak before a group of students at a local high school.
