It was noted at Thursday’s Yachats City Council meeting that due to the death of the owner, Yachats’ only gas station has been shuttered and is now subject to estate action. Word on the street has it that once the estate issues are fulfilled, a buyer will likely be found and reopen it. But until then, anyone living in Yachats better leave enough gas in their tank to drive the 8 miles to Waldport to get gas, 25 miles to Newport, or 26 miles to Florence.
Yachats becoming gasless poses not only a rather large inconvenience for Yachats motorists, but also for the city, which operates a number of working vehicles. Discussions about the situation were waged by public works employees and the council, both agreeing that an assessment should be made as to how the city might be able to stock up on fuel by making runs to Waldport, Newport or Florence. They said they have some tanks that can fit in the back of pickups to do some of the hauling and then filling up various city tanks around town. The public works director said he would have a fuel stocking report back to the council at their next meeting.
