Newport City Clerk-Recorder swore in five recently added Newport Fire volunteers and promoted a veteran volunteer to the rank of Lieutenant of the support company.
The support side of the fire department handles many functions at a fire or accident scene including flagging, air bottle changes, accountability, safety, and once the fire is out, “rehab” operations. They help put the full punch of resources behind every fellow firefighter who enters a live fire incident.
Raising their hand to repeat the oath were Lt. Debbie Helmricks, Jonathon Anderson, Michaela Puentes, Denise Naelgeli, Dawn John and Trent Michels.
Volunteers are extraordinary money savers for cities and counties in that they provide fire and other emergency services for the cost of training, supplies, and equipment. A fully paid fire staff is beyond the financial reach of most cities under 25,000 population and still those cities often have fully empowered volunteers. On call 24/7, they are frequent unsung powerhouses of service to the community. Every community is very blessed to have each and every one of them.
