Buried treasure? Not in Lincoln City! Glass art “treasures” are waiting right on the surface and you can walk right up to them!
Finders Keepers is back celebrating its 15th year. From Sunday, October 13th, 2013 through Memorial Day 2014, more than 2,000 glass floats will be placed on the beach in Lincoln City. You find it, you keep it!
To kick things off, there will be an special prize hidden on the beach in Lincoln City on the season’s opening day, October 13th. Find the one-of-a-kind giant Golden Sand Dollar created by Marcia Glenn of Glass Confusion, and you could win a weekend getaway in Lincoln City, including hotel accommodation, restaurant gift certificates and the opportunity to create your own custom float at the Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio. In addition to the Golden Sand Dollar and the daily glass floats, there will also be two special over-sized floats to find during the program’s opening day, which were handcrafted by local artist Kelly Howard.
“We’re excited to have Finders Keepers back for another year. This 15th anniversary of the program will mark well over 30,000 floats placed on the beaches of Lincoln City for people to find,” said Scott Humpert, Public Relations Coordinator for the Lincoln City Visitor and Convention Bureau. “Last year we invited successful treasure hunters to share their finds with us via social media, and we hope that they do so again this year. It’s fun for everyone to see the beautiful and wide variety of glass floats that our artisans create. The “golden” sand dollar with the weekend getaway and the two special giant glass floats are a great way to kick things off!”
Share your finds via Facebook at www.facebook.com/LincolnCityOregon or on Twitter using the tag @lcvcb and #FindersKeepers.
As if daily float drops weren’t enough, keep an eye out for special glass art drops throughout the next several months. These special drops will include a combination of glass floats, sand dollars, crabs and starfish. For a schedule of upcoming drops visit www.oregoncoast.org/finders-keepers.
The official handcrafted Finders Keepers glass floats will be signed, numbered, and will be hidden along the 7½ miles of public beaches of Lincoln City. When the floats are found, they become collector’s items. Bring your discovered treasure to the Visitors’ Center at 540 NE Hwy 101 in Lincoln City to receive your certificate of authenticity and a biographical sketch of the artist who created the glass float. If you are unable to walk on the beach, stop by and fill out a slip to enter to win a glass float.
Finders Keepers is an annual promotion, which began in 1997, when a local artist first thought of glass floats as an intriguing way to launch the new millennium. Lincoln City sponsored the project, hosting the inaugural season in 1999-2000. Tourists continue to come from around the country to search for their own brilliantly-colored, signed and numbered glass float.
