Newport area homeless flock to Project Homeless Connect at Nazarene Church

A steady flow of our area’s homeless individuals and families moved through a series of services they need at Project Homeless Connect at Newport’s Nazarene Church today. The annual event, at 12th and Nye, provides a rainbow of services to the homeless like getting ID cards, medical referrals, birth certificates, social security and medicaid information, job referrals and job training, care for their animals, flu shots, dental work along with a long list of other services, including a big free lunch.

Project Homeless Connect workers say they’re seeing more families now rather than individual homeless, in that the prolonged recession is taking a harder and more cruel toll on already financially strapped families. Those that have pets were able to get them checked out, get up to date on their shots, and baby-sat while their owners were inside getting the human side of the help-line.

Inside, homeless citizens were innoculated against the flu, got their teeth fixed, enjoyed a haircut, shopped for heavy clothing, free toiletries, new bags and new portable shelters to keep them out of the rain. They got their personal paperwork in order, signed up for veterans medical benefits, disability benefits if warranted and a host of other sources of information.

Project Homeless Connect food donors included Franz Bakeries, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, Kum-Yons, Bayshore Realty, Newport Cafe, Mo’s, Ocean Unity Church, Local Ocean, Newport Four Square Church, Ya-Hots Video and Country Store, Advantage Real Estate, Oscar’s Mexican Food, Central Coast Assembly of God, First Presbyterian Church, Georgie’s Restaurant, Coca Mocha Joe’s, Newport Nazarene Church, Thriftway, Walgreens, St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Mid-Coast Christian Church, Oceanview Assisted Living, La Maison Bakery & Cafe, Atonement Lutheran Church and South Beach Church.
