Oregon State Police (OSP) and the medical examiner are investigating the cause of the death of an elderly male found Thursday morning next to his bicycle along Highway 101 in Yachats. The 72-year old male was vacationing in the area and his name will be released Friday.
According to Lieutenant Justin McGladrey, today at approximately 10:30 a.m., OSP troopers and local emergency responders were dispatched to a report of a male lying on the highway shoulder near milepost 163 in Yachats. On arrival, the male was unconscious and not breathing, and was transported by ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport where he was pronounced deceased. He was wearing a bicycle helmet.
An unidentified witness reportedly told fire personnel she saw the bike tip over as it was being operated southbound. There is no evidence of vehicle involvement or any sign of external injury.
Yachat’s Fire and Rescue, South Coast Ambulance, Lincoln County Medical Examiner’s Office and Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
