As many people in and around Newport know, Chandler Davis is the Johnny Appleseed of drumming. He keeps moving about Lincoln County spreading good will and the fun of group rhythm-making. But his moving around the county has suddenly stopped. Chandler’s van, with a bezillian miles on it, has gone to that great drum circle in the sky.
Friends and admirers of Chandler’s pulse-beat leadership are gathering at Cecil’s in Newport Tuesday evening for a benefit concert to raise the money that will get Chandler back in the driver’s seat.
One of Chandler’s many “associate drummers,” Karen Dichari, reports that she and a couple dozen of Chandler’s closest friends are throwing a concert in his honor and on his behalf in his pursuit of replacement wheels. Karen has found a van that will do the trick and her friend Lisha’s husband has inspected it, declaring it worthy of the thousand dollars required to make it Chandler’s new drum chariot.
If you know Chandler then you are quite aware that he always helps out as well as donates hours and hours of his time for community events and causes, not the least of which is promoting health care for all in Lincoln County.
The benefit concert will have some well known musicians on stage, among them Newport’s soon-to-be-hired City Attorney Rob Connell. And Connell says he’ll have some of his musical compadres coming up on stage with him.
That’s Tuesday night, 7pm at Cecil’s (next door to Abbey’s Pizza) for a fundraising musical benefit for Newport’s Community Booster and Drum Thumper Chandler Davis, who by the way, just had a birthday this week.
So don’t forget to wish him happy birthday while you enjoy great live music and don’t forget to put a little something in the kitty.
