Thanks to the Mormon “Helping Hands” program The Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce building is sporting a fresh new look. After fundraising and purchasing cedar shake shingles, the Chamber ran into difficulty in coordinating volunteer time schedules, skills, and tools required to properly install the shingles. Chamber Director, Nonni Augustine, had heard about the community service work by The Lincoln City Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and contacted them to see if they would consider finishing the project. The goal of the “Helping Hands” program, according to www.lds.org, is to provide community service and disaster relief to those in need. The church decided to take on the project, a date was set and the “Helping Hands” members had the building finished in one day.
A group of about a dozen “Helping Hands” members spent approximately eleven hours at the Chamber completing the project that had been started but was stalled. “It was amazing! The group just descended on us at 8:00am and worked diligently until around 7:00pm when the job was done and the whole building looked brand new,” said Nonni Augustine, Executive Director of the Chamber.
Others who volunteered their time, and or tools and skills to the Chamber were Jim Davis and his crew at Central Coast Builders who got the project started and followed through with supervision; Seth Lenaerts and other members of the Young Professionals, a Chamber committee; Lyle Gowing, who tackled the job without help on several occasions; and Monica Valencia of Pac West, Linda Roy of Lincoln City Realty and Chris Waugh of On The Fly.
