Young Newport man survives acrobatic rollover on Yaquina Bay Road early Friday (the 13th)
A young Newport man rolled his pickup while traveling eastbound on the Yaquina Bay Road early Friday. Police say as the vehicle headed east at around 1am, it suddenly veered into the opposite lane at about the turnoff for the big LNG tank just east of Newport. Police say his pickup left the uphill side of the pavement, hit the hill, nosed up, spun vertically, clipped a power pole, then hit the hill again and gently fell back, top first onto the pavement. One officer said the soft landing probably accounts for the man escaping what could have been fatal injuries.
Officers said alcohol did not appear to be involved. The man’s parents were on scene shortly after the crash. The man not only called his parents but also for a tow company to haul off what was left of his vehicle.
Yaquina Bay Road was shut down completely for around 45 minutes until crews could clear the wreck.
