A late afternoon thunder booming squall line moved ashore in Newport and dumped a lot rain on us in a very short period of time. It overwhelmed storm drains, some of which were not fully clear as it was. Normally they’re cleaned out in the Fall in anticipation of the heavy winter rains. This early storm caught public works by surprise.
The rain came down fast and furious filling up the intersection of Bay and 101 as well as at Bayley and 101. There was also flooding at Avery, west of 101 down the hill. A garage got some water in it.
Up on 101 at Bay, the Verizon phone store got some water in their front door. Northbound bound traffic on 101 was restricted to to the left lane, the right lane mostly submerged from Bayley to Bay.
Here in Newport we received a tenth-of-an-inch of rain in the hour, Yachats got nearly a full inch, Roads End also a full inch. Eugene got more than a third of an inch in the hour. Stayton reported an inch, Turner reported two inches in 90 minutes.
An urban flooding advisory is in effect as of 5:55pm for Yamhill, Marion, Linn, Polk, Benton and Clackamas Counties.
