Another Yachats Town Hall Meeting on controversial downtown improvements planned by ODOT – Wednesday Sept 4, 5pm
ODOT planners along with Yachats City Councilors and Planning Commissioners will present what is expected to be a modified version of improvements to the downtown section of Highway 101. The plan covers the highway through the downtown area from 7th Street south to Ocean View Drive. The meeting is described as “an opportunity to help guide improvements that will make the highway corridor safer, improve access and parking, make the highway more pedestrian and bicycle friendly and improve the appearance of downtown Yachats and the highway corridor,” according to a meeting announcement issued by Clerk Recorder Nancy Batchelder.
At the last town hall meeting on the subject last May, a fairly disgruntled group of citizens made it quite clear that the improvements proposed by ODOT look like they’re trying to create a cookie-cutter urban landscape through the heart of Yachats rather than preserving it’s quaint, unique coastal charm. They complained that ODOT’s vision would eliminate valuable parking for tourists – especially for those seeking to impulse buy dinner or an ice cream cone. They complained that ODOT’s plan may cause a net increase in the total number of parking spaces, but too few of them will be close enough to businesses to be effective. After rebuke after rebuke, ODOT said it would meet again with civic leaders to develop a better plan. That’s what is expected to be presented next Wednesday night, September 4th, at the Yachats Commons. The Town Hall meeting starts at 5pm.
