Lincoln City Police is trying to make it easy for the public to give the right of way to pedestrians (and in a few days, STUDENTS) crossing the street at corners. We say “at corners” because under Oregon State law ALL CORNERS CROSSINGS are LEGAL CROSSWALKS. Doesn’t even require a drop of white paint on the pavement. Don’t believe it? Check the state DMV driver’s manual.
So here’s how the pedestrian operation will work. Lincoln City Police observers will watch as one of their “pedestrian decoys” tries to get across a very busy Highway 101 between North 19th and North 22nd. If motorists don’t yield the right of way it’ll be very expensive for them.
To be more than fair, Lincoln City Police has issued this warning story to give everyone time to think about pedestrian safety and how it is sometimes quite compromised by who are in a hurry or too distracted to notice what’s going on ahead of them. However, the police thought about that too. They’re putting up warning signs the day BEFORE the operation saying that the next day will be the TEST DAY! And on TEST DAY the signs will say that the TEST is going on RIGHT NOW!
So there you have it. Lincoln Police are not playing a game of GOTCHA! They just want drivers to remember that they’re operating a very heavy vehicle that can really hurt somebody if the driver is not paying attention.
The Pedestrian Safety Operation will begin at 10am, Monday, September 9th. It will last until 1pm the same day. Lincoln City Police also want to remind motorists that school zones are posted at 20mph. Those tickets can put a big hole in your house payment.
