Newport Police Officers responded to a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwy 101 and NE 52nd St. at around 6am Wednesday morning. But it took them a while to track down the driver responsible.
Police learned that after striking two other vehicles while they were stopped for a red light, the driver and occupants of a gray Chevrolet Tahoe fled the scene on foot. The occupants of the two other vehicles were able to give a physical description of the driver of the vehicle.
Newport Police Officers began an area search. The occupants were spotted walking south on the beach near the surf line, in the area of the Agate Beach Wayside. Officers accessed the beach with a police vehicle at the Nye Beach Turnaround, and intercepted the three subjects on the sand.
The driver of the Tahoe is identified as Luz Uribe, age 45 of Newport. Upon contacting Uribe, Officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol, and other signs of impairment. The two passengers of the Tahoe stated that Uribe was the driver of the Tahoe. One passenger was bleeding from the forehead and needed medical attention.
Uribe told Officers she left the scene of the crash because she didn’t have a driver’s license. Uribe refused to take a field sobriety test and a breath test.
Uribe was arrested and charged with DUII; Hit and Run-Felony; and Reckless Driving. She was also issued citations for Open Container; Breath Test Refusal; and Driving While Suspended. Additionally Uribe was found to have a warrant out for her arrest from another Oregon county.
She’s being held without bail at the Lincoln County Jail.
