Newport Police announced Tuesday night that things have gotten increasingly worse for commercial fishermen who need to park their vehicles safely in a spot near their boats that are moored across from the Pacific Maritime and Heritage Center. The parking area is below the center and just east of Local Ocean restaurant. And it’s getting filled with cars and trucks that don’t have a fisherman’s parking permit.
Although there are signs posted on the property, there are obviously a lot of foreign visitors who don’t read English or it could be that tourists and locals simply ignore them.
Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda informed the Newport Port Commission that police have given plenty of warnings over many months, but it appears that it’s time to start writing tickets.
So this is a warning for all those who aren’t paying close attention to the special fishermen parking area just below the Maritime Center. Those who get a ticket for parking in that lot will find that the tickets are not cheap.
