From Toledo Artist Becky Miller
On Sunday, September 1, in honor of Toledo’s Labor Day Weekend, Twisted Snout Brewery is celebrating Roodharigendag (Redhead Day in Holland). The holiday originated with an artist who put out a call for redheaded models and experienced an overwhelming response. Today, it is held the first day of September and celebrates red hair and the color red in art.
Twisted Snout, which brews a red ale it calls “Redheaded Step Hog,” is putting a bit of a spin on the tradition. Most events for redheads require that participants be born with red hair. Becky Miller, who is an artist and who owns the brewery with her husband, Stu, was not born a redhead; however, thanks to the miracles of modern beauty salons, she now sports lovely red locks.
“I am a redhead at heart,” she says. “I may not have been a redhead at birth, but I chose red hair and I love it. Many others are in the same situation that I am, identifying as a redhead, but not qualifying to participate in functions for redheads. We are the unwanted step children of the Ginger family. We wanted to put on an event that celebrates red hair even for us redheaded step children.”
The Millers will offer a special all day on their Redheaded Step Hog ale, with an extra special for redheads. And for those who aren’t redheads yet, but would like to be just for the day, the brewery will have spray on, washable red hair coloring available (while supplies last).
Artists who have artwork which features the color red and/or who have red hair are encouraged to bring a piece of their work to the brewery to hold an impromptu red art show beginning at 5:30 pm. Please provide your own easel.
A group photo of redheads and redheaded step children will be taken at 6:00 pm. Special limited edition commemorative stickers will also be distributed. Twisted Snout Brewery is located at 318 S. Main Street.
