Self taught artist Ivan Kelly, a native of Ireland, began his painting career with a love for craggy mountains & its wildlife that first inspired him in 1973 to begin painting on-location in the Rocky Mountains with only his aluminum tripod easel and sketchbook.
Now 40 years later, celebrating the 20th year of his own Toledo Studio-Gallery where he exhibits his studio and on-location coastal landscape and wildlife oil paintings. Although his on-location paintings are now finished on his french easel, his tripod is still part of his art tools as well as sketchbook, charcoal pencils, paint brushes and artist palette knives and, of course paint.
One big painting can entail several little “on-location sketches” or on-location thumbnail charcoal composition sketches; Ivan continues the process in his studio, creating hard clay wildlife molds to study the effect of light and shadow, before working the wildlife onto canvas on board which he primes himself. On one painting trip through Yellowstone Park, Ivan came upon a black bear sow along with her cub, enjoying their luncheon on mountain berry bushes which inspired “Berry Picker” featured in the 2012 Spring/Summer issue of International Wildlife Art Journal.
For many years Ivan painted the Coastal landscape and was consequently juried into several national and international marine exhibits and magazine journals. This year, Ivan was awarded “Top 50 Ribbon” by Salon International 2013 for his Oregon Pacific Dunes oil painting and is a Signature Member since 2000 of the American Society of Marine Artists. which has juried Ivan’s paintings in many national public art museum marine art tours.
