After a well intended but none-the-less tough start, Road and Driveway of Newport delivered two dump truck loads of slimy mud Friday for next weekend’s Buccaneer Rampage at the Newport Airport. The event is a fundraiser for the Newport Recreation Department to help pay for youth sports and recreation fees for local children whose families can’t afford them. The Coast Hills Classic Bike Race is another recreation department fundraiser to ensure as many local kids as possible can participate in wholesome youth sports activities offered by the department.
As you can see from the map, there are many challenging obstacles spread over a few miles of muddy, steep terrain. Competitors will have to brave everything from flaming hurdles to mud crawls and rope walls. At the end of the race, all competitors will have to “Walk the Plank!” Everybody finishing the race will receive a prize and there will be a special prize for the best pirate costume.
There will also be an after party celebration with music, food and yes, a pirate’s beer garden. Due to the intense physical nature of this event, participants must be at least 18 years of age on race day, Saturday, August 24th.
Earlier in the day a dump truck full of “crushed rock powder + water” partially leaked out onto East Olive and Highway 101 causing a mini “Buccaneer Rampage” for motorists as they tried to navigate through the slippery goo. It was all cleaned up within an hour. The delivery later in the day went a lot better.
