Provided by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office
Monday morning at approximately 8:25am, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Rene Lopez was patrolling Highway 101 in the area of milepost 148.5 when he noticed an oncoming yellow Kawasaki motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed. Upon checking his radar, Deputy Lopez observed the vehicle was traveling at 72 miles per hour in a posted 55 mile per hour zone.
Deputy Lopez activated his overhead emergency lights as it passed him in the opposite direction and turned around in an attempt to stop the vehicle. As Deputy Lopez caught up to the motorcycle it turned onto N Beaver Creek Rd while continuing to accelerate and then turned onto south S Beaver Creek Rd.
The motorcycle failed to negotiate a turn at the 200 block of S Beaver Creek Rd and crashed into the ditch off the east side of the roadway. Deputy Lopez held the driver at gunpoint until other officers arrived at his location. Shortly after other deputies arrived, the driver was placed in handcuffs and identified as Paul Markham Murphy of Seal Rock.
Murphy was taken into custody for Reckless Driving and cited for Violation of Basic Speed Rule, Failure to Drive Within Lane, Driving While Suspended, Fail to Yield to Emergency Vehicle, Driving Uninsured and Failure to Notify DMV of Address Change. Murphy was transported and lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on the charge of Reckless Driving. His bail was set at $15,000.00.
