The second annual $3,000 Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge is returning to the Port of Newport this Saturday and Sunday! This very popular cook-off celebrating Oregon’s Albacore tuna industry and fishermen will feature 30 culinary teams from all over the Northwest competing for $3,000 in prize money. The event will take place at Port of Newport property 2000 SE Marine Science Drive next to NOAA MOC-P and across from the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
Saturday’s competition will feature the professional and amateur divisions from 11:00am to 3:00pm with Culinary Students competing on Sunday from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Tickets include “all you can sample” from the recipes created by these talented chefs. The tuna loins used will come fresh from the boats on Newport’s working bayfront.
The talented judging panel is headed up by Margo True, food editor of Sunset Magazine, Katherine Miller editor of The Oregonian’s FOODday, Stephanie Stricklen. news anchor and host of Live @ 7 on KGW-TV, Portland and Chef Gary Puetz, the Seafood Steward, who will also be doing tuna cooking demonstrations both days.
Rogue Brewery will have a special Ale Garden on Saturday, free Pepsi both days, plus a special added attraction include two classic car shows featuring Newport’s Bay City Cruisers on Saturday and the Rollin’ Oldies from Lebanon on Sunday. These amazing vintage vehicle displays are included in the ticket price.

The Newport Food Pantry and Operation Snackpacks emergency food programs for families and children will receive a generous portion of the proceeds.
