WALDPORT: A one-mile section of Canal Creek Road [Forest Road 3462], beginning at Highway 34, will be closed from August 12 through 20 due to road construction. Canal Creek Road is located seven miles east of Waldport.

“This road closure is necessary to improve the stability of Canal Creek Road,” said Michele Jones, District Ranger for the Central Coast Ranger District and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. “The work will include constructing a retaining wall which will improve the road for years to come,” she added.

The closure will affect local residents as well as visitors to the Canal Creek Campground. East and west detour routes are available from Canal Creek Road beyond the closure back to Highway 34.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause travelers, but these repairs are necessary to insure safe passage on this key road,” said Jones. “We are committed to providing residents and visitors a map and signs along the way to help them navigate the detour,” she added.

Detour Routes:
· The Boundary Road Detour [Forest Road 58] connects to Highway 34 thirteen miles east of Waldport. To reach Canal Creek Road via this detour, take the Boundary Road approximately 5.5 miles and turn right onto Forest Road 5860 [locally known as Red Creek road]. Stay on Forest Road 5860 for approximately two miles until you reach Canal Creek Road. Canal Creek Campground is about one quarter mile to the left. This detour is eight miles and takes approximately 30 minutes. The road is mostly paved with some sections of gravel.

· The Eckman Creek Road Detour [Forest Road 53] connects to Highway 34 three miles east of Waldport. To reach Canal Creek Road via this detour, take Forest Road 53 [Eckman Creek Road] south from Highway 34. Travel nine miles on Forest Road 53 to the junction with Forest Road 5304, veer to the left and continue on Forest Road 5304. Canal Creek Campground is about three miles from this point. This detour is 12.5 miles and takes approximately 40 minutes. The road is a combination of paved and of gravel sections. Expect to possibly see some log trucks hauling on the route—please drive cautiously.

The Canal Creek Road Detour Map is a Geospatial PDF which means that it has geo-referenced location information like latitude and longitude coordinates embedded in it. You can upload the PDF into your mobile device and then, using an app like PDF Maps from Avenza, you can use your device’s built-in GPS to track your location on the map. A printed map is available at forest offices. The downloadable version is on the forest webpage.
