The annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life is kicking off all across the country over the new few weeks – coast to coast and border to border. Here in Newport, families and friends of cancer survivors and cancer victims gathered Friday evening and a number walked all night to honor the financial pledges given to them to raise money for research into how to beat cancer in all of its many forms. And the latest research is looking very promising; teaching the body’s own T-cells to rise up and kill the cancer cells, no matter where they may be in the body.
Here in Newport, hundreds gathered for the 6pm opening of the 2013 Relay for Life event. Besides rallying themselves to do what’s necessary to someday beat cancer, they also paused to remember those who lost their gallant fight against it. A very long slide show pictured those courageous human beings who struggled mightily to overcome – but succumbed none-the-less.
Relay for Life officials say it appears that pledges alone for the walkers has exceeded forty thousand dollars, and that the income from the silent auction will push it even higher.
Relay for Life went all night long, wrapping up at 6am.
And they’ll do it all again next year until the scourge of the Earth, cancer, is finally cast back into history as one less demon that humans must face while they just try to live, love and be happy.
