Banded Alder Borer. Rosie Williams says the “Rosalia Funebris” is a member of the very diverse family of longhorn beetles. However Guille Brown says this particular boring beetle feeds off dead or decaying wood, so they’re not a significant threat to our local forests as other boring beetles were back East in 1999 when a huge outbreak of the beetles killed entire forests. Those were Asian Longhorned Beetles. They’re not welcome here.
There was a waterfall of emails from so many of you offering the correct answer…many responses with full photographic proof. It’s really delightful to know so many of you are out there. I keep doing the news from Newport and see the 45,000 unique visitors a month and the hundreds of thousands of page hits a month…but a Google Analytics graph can’t compare to the instant impact of a thunderous response on a question.
