Independence head-on: Pickup vs. Motorcyclist – Pickup driver dies – motorcyclist lives to tell the story
A motorcyclist surprisingly survived a head-on crash between himself and a pickup a few miles north of Independence this morning. Witnesses told Oregon State Troopers that the motorcyclist was headed south on Highway 51 toward an approaching pickup which suddenly turned left in front of him. The motorcyclist hit the pickup in the right front as it went through the turn. The impact of Bradley Mosey, 22 of Independence, appeared to be through the windshield, through the driver’s area, and then into the pickup’s rear seat.
The pickup driver, who was wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at Salem Memorial Hospital. He was identified as Billy Auston, 77, of Monmouth. Motorcyclist Mosey was being treated for non-life threatening injuries at the same hospital. OSP Troopers say Mosey’s helmet and other protective gear minimized his injuries.
Troopers said neither alcohol nor speed were involved in the accident.
