Newport Recreation Center is once again the venue for basketball camps for young players. Staged over two weeks starting 29th July, the camps cater for all ages from 5 to 14 and make full allowance for the level of competence and experience of the participants.
For the 4th year running, top English development coach, Steve Pearl, has made the long journey west to run the camps alongside his friend and former player Liam Hughes, who is Newport’s Sports Co-ordinator. The pair bring fun to their teaching combined with explaining to even the youngest the importance of the fundamentals of the game.
To accomodate other events in Newport, the camps have been moved to a later date and this has proven successful, with numbers showing a healthy increase over recenet years, particularly at the 5 -8 age range, with players coming from all over Lincoln County. Hughes said “I am delighted to see the increase in numbers, which can only bode well for the progression of basketball in the county as a whole. Steve’s enthusiasm is infectious for everyone concerned and I am very pleased to welcome him back to the Central Coast”.
The camps are for 5 – 8 year olds from 10 am -12 noon between Monday 29th July and Friday 2nd August. The 9 -11s are the same dates but from 2 pm – 5.30. For the week commencing 5th August, the 12 – 14 year olds are from 10 – 4.30. For further details please call the Newport Recreation Center at (541) 265-7783.
