What started out as someone acting bizarre, yelling from the roof of Pro Build at 6th and 101 in Newport evolved into a home burglary two blocks away on Northeast 8th.
Police responded to a report at around 10pm that there was a man with no shirt on standing on the roof of Pro Build yelling loudly. Police surrounded the building. They asked the fire department to bring their high rise ladder truck. But just as the truck arrived the man disappeared from view. A quick check of the area revealed the man had gotten to the ground and over a fence.
At that moment officers got a call over the radio that a domestic violence was going on at NE 17th – so they bailed out of the Pro Build call and headed north. When they got there a man took off running through the brush. There may have been two of them. Just when they were closing in on one of the men a call came over the radio that a man had come home to his house on Northeast 8th to find a stranger in his shower. Officers jumped back in their cars and headed back south on 101, hung a quick left on 8th and pulled up outside the house. Inside they found someone with a familiar face – the Pro Build screamer still in the shower.
The now very soggy burglar was identified as Randel Ripka, who is on probation from an earlier conviction. He was led out of the house and placed in a patrol car which whisked him away to the Lincoln County Jail. There he was booked on two counts of criminal mischief and for possession of methamphetamine.
