As part of the ongoing Writers on Writing series offered by the Coast Chapter of Willamette Writers, Portland author Lily Gardner will offer a FREE workshop on “Character Building: How to Create, Enhance or Expand Characters and Get Them On the Page.” Workshop topics include:

*How to Create or Enhance Characters:  Writing exercises using prompts to create new characters or round out existing characters
* Expand your Characters: Writing exercise using the character dossier and action scenarios
* How to get your Character on the Page: Description, Dialogue
* Conflict: competing agendas
* Observation—how your character sees the world
* How to bring voice into the character equation

Lily will bring hand-outs for all attendees. Bring paper, writing implements and have a character in mind (if you don’t have a character, we’ll all help you find one based on your project.)

Lily Gardner is the author of A Bitch Called Hope, a noir mystery set on the rainy streets of Portland, Oregon. She learned fiction at the table of Carolyn Altman and Tom Spanbauer’s Dangerous Writers twelve years and a million words ago. She continues to study with storymeister Jim Frey. She has also written and published dozens of articles on folklore. Currently writing her second novel, Lily lives in Portland with her husband, two corgis and several thousand books.

This Willamette Writers event takes place from 7:00 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, July 16th in the Newport Public Library’s McEntee meeting room at 35 NW Nye Street in Newport. The event is free and open to the public.

Willamette Writers is the largest writers’ organization in Oregon and one of the largest writers’ organizations in the United States. Willamette Writers’ goal is to provide and encourage a creative environment and support system for current and aspiring writers. Since its beginning in 1965, Willamette Writers has provided meeting places for the exchange of ideas and information and has initiated programs designed to help writers increase skills related to the craft of writing.
