A small sedan with one aboard ran off Yaquina Bay Road early this afternoon, hit a tree, bounced off, hit another tree and then rolled over on it’s side. Driver of the vehicle was killed during the incident.
Newport and Toledo Fire-Rescue personnel removed the body. No immediate information was available other than there was just one occupant in the vehicle.
The following is a news release by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office:
On July 03, 2013 at approximately 1:15 pm, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a reported traffic crash on Yaquina Bay Rd near milepost 3.5 east of Newport, Oregon. A 911 caller reported finding a vehicle on it’s side into a tree over the embankment on the south side of the roadway with a deceased person inside. Initial deputies on scene confirmed that the occupant was deceased.
Collision Reconstructionists from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to conduct further investigation. The investigation revealed that a green 1972 Triumph Spitfire operated by 42 year old Newport resident Jason Sparks was traveling eastbound on Yaquina Bay Road when he failed to negotiate a curve and left the south side of the roadway striking a tree. Sparks was the only occupant of the vehicle and was killed upon impact with the tree. Investigators were unable to determine the exact time of the crash, but know that it occurred sometime after 9:00 AM today. Sparks had left his home in Newport to report to work at a location east of the crash location.
Speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
Next of kin has been notified.
