GP Containerboard Boat “Starter Kit” Available Free Now for August 17 Competition at Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show
TOLEDO, Ore.: Channel your inner MacGyver this summer. Use your imagination to create a seaworthy cardboard boat that can carry you and your teammates down a 100 yard course and back. Georgia-Pacific is hosting its 3rd Annual Containerboard Boat Contest August 17 during the Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show. Free boat “Starter Kits” are available at the Mill now through August 9 for people who want to build and race their own containerboard boat.
All boats must be human- powered using paddles. The kit comes with 2-5’x12’ sheets of Georgia-Pacific containerboard, 2-18’ sticks of paper roll stock, registration and waiver sheet, plus a complete set of construction and safety rules. Be creative. You can paint, embellish and add containerboard from other sources, but only one kit per boat, please.
Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers in each category, best design for youth and non-youth boats, as well as the most spectacular sinking in each class. Three classes of boats will race:
Class 1: Youth Boat (for family, school or youth groups age 12 and up)
Class 2: Large Boat (for vessels that hold more than two people)
Class 3: Small Boat (for vessels that hold up to two people)
Groups can make and race as many boats as they would like, so challenge your friends, family and business associates to an entertaining day on Depot Slough.
The contest itself takes place on August 17 at 2 pm at the Port of Toledo’s Wooden Boat Show. Sign in at the Georgia-Pacific booth in the lawn area between 9- 10 am. Boat inspections take place at 11 am and People’s Choice Judging runs between 10 am and 1 pm.
