Governor Kitzhaber orders flags to Half-staff in honor of fallen Oregon Firefighter John Percin, Jr of West Linn
(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber today ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, July 3, in honor of John Percin, Jr.
Percin was one of 19 firefighters who lost their lives when a wildland fire storm swept over them in Yarnell, AZ over the weekend. As the flames roared down on them, fanned by high winds, they jumped into their individual “shake and bake” survival tents. However, none of them survived. It was the worst loss of firefighter lives in 80 years of wildland fire fighting.
In honoring the passing of Firefighter Percin, Governor Kitzhaber said “John Percin, Jr., was a graduate of West Linn High School and a member of one of the country’s distinguished hotshot fire crews. He gave his life fighting a destructive fire in Arizona, along with 18 other men performing critical but dangerous work to protect people, property, and natural resources. My thoughts are with his family and friends, and I urge all Oregonians to take a moment to remember John, his bravery, and his noble sacrifice.”
