Oregon Coast Council for the Arts welcomes Ginger Gouveia’s exhibit, “Children of the World,” to the Upstairs Gallery in July. Opening on July 5 with a reception for the artist from 5pm to 7pm, visitors to the show will see a delightful series of images from many different places. The show will run through August 31.

Ginger Gouveia is a local photographer who retired to the central Oregon coast over twelve years ago. Since that time, she has had the opportunity to pursue her interest and increase her knowledge of photography. “I have been taking photos most of my life and it has always been my passion to look through the lens in an attempt to capture the emotion of the moment. Whether photographing someone I meet in my travels or a scene from nature, I hope to inspire in, the viewer, an interest in the subjects I have chosen,” she states.

Gouveia’s training includes photography courses at Linn Benton Community college and studying under Peter Schutte and Gary Tepfer at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Her work has also been shown at the Corvallis Unitarian Church, the New Morning Bakery in Corvallis and the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport.

While traveling the world, with the purpose of sharing friendship and making people laugh by creating balloon hats, Gouveia, a mother and grandmother, is inspired by the people she meets, especially the children. She often travels solo, sometimes staying with host families and volunteering in local communities. She says this “provides me with an opportunity to be an intimate part of the culture where I can listen, learn and observe.”

Recently, she developed a digital camera project for youngsters with donated cameras, printers and paper in a restructured area of New Orleans, and hopes to repeat the project with children in other places.

Ginger Gouveia is a sensitive photographer whether her subject is children from her travels or landscapes. A member of Yaquina Art Association, she shows regularly at the CNC Gallery. These photographs depict, with vivid color, some of the connections she has made with children and families around the world during the past eighteen years.

The Upstairs Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center is located at 777 NW Beach Drive overlooking the ocean on the Nye Beach Turnaround. The Gallery is open from 12 to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is a nonprofit arts organization and the regional arts council that brings high quality arts experiences to the coast.
