Enjoy an Educational Odyssey at the Embarcadero

Vacation on the Central Oregon Coast just got even more enticing for the month of July! Ocean Watch, the 64-foot cutter that sailed Around the Americas in 2009-10, will be docked at the Embarcadero Marina in Newport throughout July offering free opportunities to tour the boat, learn about its mission and potentially even take a trip out on the ocean. Visitors can start their adventure by booking a room at the Embarcadero Resort Hotel and Marina and then plan out a self-guided, customized educational odyssey with the help of local experts.

Made possible by Oregon State University and the 4-H Youth Development Program, this marine education opportunity kicks off with a 4-H Marine Ambassador Camp through July 5th. Fifty-seven competitively-selected youth from around Oregon and Washington will spend two nights on the OSU campus and three nights in Newport learning about the health of our oceans and how changes are impacting ecosystems and human life. Their work will culminate in a public information day on July 4th, where these Marine Ambassadors will share their newly acquired knowledge with visitors to the Ocean Watch vessel.

Thanks in large part to the generous assistance of Newport’s Embarcadero Resort Hotel and Marina, the Ocean Watch will be moored there throughout July and open for pre-scheduled public tours. Individuals, families and groups of up to 24 participants at a time can tour the vessel for free, potentially going out into the bay or on the ocean, weather permitting. Possible activities include spending time with OSU marine science faculty and volunteer educators, observing a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), participating in animal and plant surveys and learning about the Around the Americas tour itself.

To book a room at the Embarcadero Resort Hotel and Marina located on Newport’s bayfront, call 800-547-4779. To learn more about the Ocean Watch tour opportunities available July 6-31 contact OSU 4-H Program Coordinator Todd Williver at the Lincoln County Extension Office, 541-574-6534, todd.williver@oregonstate.edu. Information about the Ocean Watch’s campaign to Inspire Awareness, Attention and Action can be found at www.aroundtheamericas.org.
