A Newport resident in a nearby home called 9-1-1 Sunday evening to report that it appeared that smoke was wafting up from inside the siding of a home on NE 10th, just east of Benton.
Newport Fire and Police pulled up and saw the smoke for themselves and quickly made their way toward the back of the house. As they drew closer they heard the unmistakable sounds of several families and their children having a great time – enjoying a rather large barbecue. It was a pretty big iron BBQ pit that was “getting the job done.”
One of the police officers knew most everybody there and they offered him a seat at the table. But even with rich barbecue aromas filling the air, the officer politely declined and returned (quite reluctantly, no doubt) to his patrol car.
Fire crews returned to station.
