U.S. 101 fog seal planned June 18-19 near Brookings
Expect brief delays, intermittent driveway closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
BROOKINGS — Motorists are advised to expect minor delays and intermittent driveway closures for maintenance work along U.S. 101 from the Chetco River Bridge to the Benham Lane intersection on Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 19. The maintenance operation is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and is weather-dependent.
The ODOT maintenance crew will apply a fog seal — a spray of asphalt emulsion used to waterproof the roadway, which delays weathering and reduces the aging susceptibility by lowering permeability to water and air.
Motorists should expect minor delays and watch for ODOT maintenance workers on and near the roadway. Advance signing will also be used to alert traffic.
“Fog seals are a cost-effective way to maintain the highway,” said Brian Watjen, ODOT maintenance manager, “but we understand how important it is to motorists and local businesses to finish this work safely and with as little disruption to traffic as possible.
“We ask motorists to drive with caution and exercise patience during this maintenance activity.”
Tips for driving safely in work zones
►Orange is your clue to slow down. When you see orange barrels, cones and signs — even when no construction work is visible — hazards may still exist.
►Realize that it’s not business as usual in a work zone. Expect the unexpected. The roadway may have changed. There may be a detour or a flagger.
►Maintain extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead to give yourself extra reaction time in case of a problem.
