Attention young musicians! Are you a string musician or band student looking for opportunities to learn, play and perform with others over the summer? Would you like to gain experience playing your instrument in an orchestral setting? Then check out the fun Summer Music Camp sponsored by the Newport Symphony Orchestra (NSO)!
NSO violinists Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox started the annual daycamp three summers ago to give beginning and intermediate youth musicians on the coast a chance to meet and play with other students outside of school activities, under instruction from local professional and NSO musicians. This year’s camp will be held in Newport on July 8-12 from 9am to 3pm daily, and registration is now underway.
The NSO Summer Music Camp offers a great opportunity for young musicians to strengthen their skills, and – in the case of many string players – play with an ensemble for the first time. Camp activities include playing full orchestra material and small ensemble pieces, composing original works, and playing music theory games. The program is for campers ages 10-18, and a range of playing abilities can be accommodated (although at least one year of playing experience is preferred). The fee to attend the camp is $130 and scholarships are available. A free public concert will be held July 12th at 2pm, at which the campers will perform their compositions and the pieces they have been working on during the week.
The Summer Music Camp is just one of a number of opportunities offered by NSO for young music lovers on the Oregon coast. The NSO Summer Festival Series begins in early July, and kicks off with the annual FREE Fourth of July Patriotic Pops concert at 4pm in the Newport High School gym. Then on the following day, David Odgen Stiers will narrate musical renditions of two classic stories favored by youth: “Ferdinand the Bull” and “Casey at the Bat”. Tickets for this July 5th 2pm concert are $10 adult / $5 child and are now on sale at the Performing Arts Center. The Festival Series will end on July 6th with a Pipe Organ and Strings concert at the Newport First Presbyterian Church at 7:30pm ($20/adult).
Campers and other prospective young musicians are encouraged to attend the concerts and see the live orchestra in action. Don’t know which instrument you would like to play, yet? Perhaps you will become intrigued with one you see and hear!
