Coast Guard Yaquina Bay reports that the fishing boat Reel Time lost its engine ten miles off Newport Saturday morning at around 7:30. The Coast Guard reports the Reel Time was halibut fishing when it’s motor quit. The captain reported to the Coast Guard that he was trying to limp back in on this back up smaller motor (kicker), but that the going was very slow. He asked the Coast Guard to call his South Beach Marina dockside neighbor boat “Jessie Marie” to see if they could come out and tow him in.
The call was made and the Jessie Marie motored out and towed the Reel Time to within a half mile of the bar off Newport. By then the afternoon weather had changed; the winds kicked up and so did the seas to the point that it wasn’t a good idea to try go proceed across the bar without Coast Guard assistance.
Two 47 foot Coast Guard Motor Lifeboats met both craft on scene and one of the Coast Guard boats attached a line to the Reel Time and safely got it across the bar. The Coast Guard towed the Reel Time to a spot near its South Beach Marina moorage where, with a little help from some friends, the boat was tied up.
