Many of the 140 Food Share and Food Pantry volunteers and drivers were treated to a nice meal of their own Friday afternoon at the Shilo Cafe in Newport. They thoroughly enjoyed what amounted to a home cooked meal sitting by big picture windows overlooking the surf and sea below. It was Food Share’s way of saying thank you for all the thousands of hours that the good hearted volunteers put in to help ensure that no one needlessly goes to bed hungry in Lincoln County. Especially children.
Volunteers for Food Share man not only Food Shares headquarters in Newport, but also serve at all the food pantries in the county. Volunteers also work at meals sites, participate in the Backpack for Kids program, Cooking Matters classes, Drivers, Senior Box Delivery, and fundraisers like Bejeweled and Chef’s Against Hunger.
Donations come from private parties, the faith communities and a Thanksgiving mailer seeking donations along with grants from local governments.
So donate when you can, and volunteer when it’s appropriate for you. You can reach Food Share at 541-265-8578 or stop by and see them at their distribution facility in Newport at 535 NE 1st.
